Chapter Eight

“I don’t want to get married just because I’m turning thirty-five and still single.” While driving to the middle school, Carson couldn’t get Gwen’s declaration out of his head. He was glad she’d made that perfectly clear. He was definitely on the same page. Maybe they could build something better than their high school relationship. Sooner rather than later, he was beginning to think.

His BFF had always been something special, with her quiet sense of humor and willingness to lend her grandmother a hand when Adele needed help. But the grown-up version was so much more. She loved Angel Point and its residents. Her passion for making the town the best place to live was inspiring. If Flynn wasn’t his main focus, he’d definitely ask her out to get to know Gwen Olsen, the woman, better.

He parked in the Ecola Middle School parking lot and joined George in the auditorium for their presentation. Starting up a junior firefighter program and giving Flynn a good reason to love his new town was just another step in making Angel Point the place where they could stay, at least until his son went off to college.

“Any questions?” he asked his young audience after finishing. When none of the middle graders filling the seats in the auditorium raised their hands, Carson, a little downhearted at the lack of excitement for the program, added, “Okay, then. Anyone wanting to participate, come talk to George before going back to class.”

George straightened the pamphlets on the table the principal had set up for them on the stage. “Bummer.”

“Yeah, I thought we’d have more interest from the students.” It was too bad really. The program was a great way for kids to get involved in their town. Carson wished he’d had something like it when he was growing up. He checked his watch. “We have forty-five minutes before we have to be at the high school. Maybe we’ll have better luck there.”

George nudged his elbow.

He looked up to see a small group of boys heading their way. A girl, with Flynn behind her, followed. They inserted information about the first meeting on Saturday inside each pamphlet and handed it to the kids. Two of the boys said they would come.

Carson breathed easier. The junior firefighters’ program wasn’t such a flop after all.

The girl stepped up to the table. George made the introductions. “This is my niece, Edda. Edda, meet Chief Loman, and his son, Flynn.”

A little too fast, Flynn said, “Hi.”

Edda, almost as tall as Flynn, straight brown hair hanging down her back, nose pierced, ignored his son. She wore a bedazzled vest over her green hoodie, jeans with holes in them, and well-worn, high-top black sneakers.

“Nice to meet you, Edda. Are you interested in participating in the junior program?”

“George is making me.”

George frowned. “Edda, be nice.”

The teenager just shrugged. Flynn, watching the exchange, was clearly taken with the girl. Was she the one his son had mentioned more than once?
